EXPANDED FOOD AND NUTRITION PROGRAM ASSISTANT

PERRY COUNTY KY

The Perry County Cooperative Extension Service’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program assistant in conjunction with the Hazard Vocational and Technical School delivered a series of 7 classes to a group that were in a job readiness program.

The pre class survey indicated that 0% of the group participated in at least 30 minutes of daily exercise. Lack of physical activity can result in adults who have an overweight classification as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity report of 2016. The report stated that 34.9 % of Kentucky residents had a body mass index of over 25.0 that classified them as overweight.

The importance of physical activity was discussed at every session and participants learned the potential impact of obesity on their health.

Post survey reports showed an increase from 0% participants being physically active to 43% being physically active and doing workouts to build and strengthen muscles and making small changes to be more active most days a week.
