Making Healthy Choices

Author: Teresa King

Planning Unit: Meade County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Nearly all the counties within Kentucky are rural, Meade County is one of them. There are only two grocery stores throughout the county. The closest grocery store from the small city of Muldraugh is located twelve miles away. Unfortunately, the majority of residents do not have any mode of transportation. Convenient stores are their only choice, so when they do get the opportunity to shop at a grocery store, planning ahead is crucial for their health and for their food budget.

The City of Muldraugh and the EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) assistant of Meade County Cooperative Extension Service partnered to offer a seven-week Healthy Choices for Every Body Program for adults. Eight females attended, ages ranging from 26 to 64. During the series of classes the participants learned about nutrition, food safety, meal planning and food budgeting. At each session a healthy recipe was prepared and sampled. The participants learned basic kitchen skills as they assisted with the prepping of the recipe.

By the end of the program, almost all (85%) improved their food resource management by planning their meals more often. Their food safety practices improved by 66%. Participants even started to bring some of their favorite recipes to class to share with the others. Several participants asked if this program could be offered again next summer.
