The Lawrence County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) assistant partnered with the Family Resource Center at Louisa East and West Elementary Schools to provide the Healthy Choices for Every Body nutrition program for parents and/ or guardians of the children in the angel tree program. The seven required lessons were taught during the 2017 fall season. Recipe samples and kitchen reinforcements were provided during each lesson. The SNAP-Ed assistant enrolled and graduated 17 parents.
As a result, participants improved their knowledge of food safety practices and food resource management as follows: 76% use a meat thermometer more; 59% indicated they thaw frozen food at room temperature less often; 71% make a list before shopping; 65% plan meals before shopping; and 59% drink regular soda less often.
