Healthy lifestyle choices is imperative for teens to develop responsibility and self-awareness of the effects of they food and fitness decisions.  The Cynthiana Chamber of Commerce works to host three 5K Run/Walk events throughout the year and encourages community members of all ages to participate.  One goal of the Harrison County Teen Council Civic Engagement Committee was for the officers to participate in the events.  Youth worked to plan a club that would encourage healthy lifestyle choices.  The 4-H Beef and Run Club consists of youth participants being a part of community and central Kentucky practice run days, as well as participation in the French Toast Stick 5K at North Central 4-H Camp and the Harrison County Color Run.  In addition, members learned the importance of selecting fresh produce and proteins to enhance healthy meal options.  Through the Durr Foundation and Kentucky 4-H Agriculture Program grants, Harrison County was able to purchase Fitbit devices for the club members and pay for one race registration fee.  16 middle and high school youth participated in the first year for the club.  100% of the club members reported learning the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, 88% of which said the club has helped them feel more confident in their ability to make better food and fitness decisions.  The Beef and Run Club will be continued for the 2019 program year, with hopes of expanding participation to include adult volunteers.
