Owensboro puts on an event each Friday throughout the summer to engage and entertain the community. Families gather downtown to visit vendors at the street fair followed by music and entertainers through the night. In conjunction with this event, the Daviess County Cooperative Extension has coordinated the Kick-Off to a Healthy and Safe Summer for multiple years. This year, Daviess County 4-H Agent coordinated with thirteen street vendors for this Kick-off to a Healthy and Safe Summer street fair. Daviess County Cooperative Extension Office, 4-H, Master Gardeners, Health Departments, Animal Clinics, and other vendors set up to distribute information to guide families to maintain a healthy lifestyle while some offered physical activities the families could take part in during the event. Daviess County Cooperative Extension distributed goody bags to the first 200 youth at this Summer Kick-off. Master Gardeners handed out window-sill garden kits and 37 families participated in the 4-H scavenger hunt. Each of these activities tailored to individual needs to promote physical fitness and enjoying the outdoors as a family activity.
