In a typical week, The National Wildlife Foundation notes that only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside, while kids in this same age group devote over 7 hours per day to electronic entertainment, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. In order to combat this epidemic, the Morgan County 4-H Council , has identified a goal of creating increased awareness, knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to make informed choices regarding healthy lifestyles, including physical activity. To help advance this directive, the Morgan County 4-H Agent has partnered with Magoffin, Rowan and Elliott County 4-H youth development agents to create a multi-county 4-H Outdoor Adventure Club.
The 4-H Multi-County Outdoor Adventure club also teaches youth responsibility and promotes being active. The youth met once a month to demonstrate some sort of physical activity, observed/toured an educational facility and was provided with a healthy snack. Twenty-five youth have enrolled in the club up to this point and participated in hiking, swimming at Cave Run Lake and learned the importance of camp survival by making their own first aid kits.
