Planning Unit: Breathitt County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

~~According to Kentucky Health Facts the lack of physical activity for all residents of Wolfe County, Kentucky is 40%. To address this problem the Nutrition Education Program Assistant partnered with the 4-H agent and the Children, Youth and Families at Risk assistant to come up with a way to provide physical activity at no cost, a healthier lifestyle and brining families closer together. In June 2017 “Rocking In Wolfe County” became all the rage during the summer months and into the fall.  Anyone could participate and it was encouraged, paint some rocks hide them and also find them, then post a photo of themselves and the rock then hide it again on the Facebook group page Rockin’ IN WC.  As a result the Wolfe County Cooperative Extension Service was able to track 1,475 participates who actively participating in the program with the youngest were being 1 and the oldest being 95. Most rocks are hidden, found and re-hid here in Wolfe County but in September a few were even spotted in London England. Rocks were hidden with facts and questions about physical activity, better beverage choices, and family time. If a participant found these rocks they could bring them into the Wolfe County Cooperative Extension Service to attend a lesson and receive water bottles. We can visually see that participants are making better beverage choices because they are filling their bottles with water. They are making better choices about physical activity because they are outside walking and kids are understanding that they can have fun while exercising. The program has also brought families closer together because they are all participating and the community has come together as well. There is more foot traffic for businesses and also to the Cooperative Extension Office and everyone that works here has been able to reach more residents. One participant stated, “This has gotten us off the couch and outside exercising and spending time with our family.” Another participant stated that my kids are actually wanting to be outside finding rocks instead of playing video games all summer, we have had so much fun!”
