According to the CDC, Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in KY.  At least 6.4% of deaths were stroke related.  This statistic, along with District I Extension Homemakers requesting the workshop on Stroke Awareness, led to FCS programming to address the concern.  As a result, FCS agent trained leaders in 10 counties on Stroke Awareness.  Believing the adage, "Knowledge is power", participants in the program gained information of the two types of stroke:  Blood clot (ischemia) or bleeding (hemorrhagic).  100% of participants learned TIA's are warning signs of possible impending debilitating stroke.  Participants indicated knowledge gained on the symptoms of stroke by sharing with the group.  They exhibited awareness of the risk factors of stoke the most significant being high blood pressure and smoking.  Surveys indicated 100% knew the risk factors following the workshop.  98% indicated they plan to have regular medical check-ups, 85% plan to eat a balanced diet, 75% plan to be more physically active, 97% will take blood pressure medication as prescribed.  This program impacted 68 leaders directly and more than 2400 extension homemakers and families through club lessons.
