Elliott County was one of 6 counties that were included in the grant to fight obesity. FCS Agent, EFNEP Assistant and SNAP-Ed Assistant partnered with local grocery store, Gilliam's IGA, to promoted eating more fruits and vegetables. SNAP-Ed Assistant presented 4 food demonstrations at the store using KY Proud Plate IT Up Recipes emphasizing eating fresh local fruits and vegetables. Samples of the recipes were passed out when customers came in. Through observation SNAP-Ed Assistant concluded 4 out of 10 shoppers purchased items to make the recipe at home. Grocery store owner made the comment that on day’s food demos were done that he sold more of the fruits and vegetables used in our recipe that he would have on a normal day.
