Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Youth Family and Consumer Sciences and Agriculture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Nelson County Extension Agents, from all areas of programming, teamed up with both FFA Chapters in Nelson County in a quest to host the 3rd Annual Ag Day & 5K.  In 2018, committees decided to also host an "inaugural" Farm to Table Breakfast and Community Networking Event.  The event began and ended at the Nelson County Fairgrounds and the Breakfast was hosted at the newly rennovated Samuels Hall, a partnership grant formed and executed by the Nelson County Fair Board and Nelson County Extension. There was room for families and young children to walk around the grounds and discover some beautiful and fun things about agriculture, including music, an agriculture word hunt, a sandbox filled with corn, and bag toss, ag olympics, farmscapes among many other activities. Local farmers brought many animals including rabbits, hogs, herding dogs and beef cattle. Proceeds in excess of $1,200 were split among the three youth organizations, Nelson County FFA, Thomas Nelson FFA, and Nelson County 4-H. 50 runners participated, 250 attended the breakfast and over 450 people joined for the event. Future plans include collaborations to host the event annually.

The run encouraged utilizing the outdoors and local trails for exercise. Community organizations, members, leaders, and participants supported the respective youth organizations in furthering the investment in Nelson County’s foreseeable, sustainable, future: the young farmers.  The breakfast featured a speech from Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles.  The main goal of the event as a totality is to encourage physical activity, nutritious foods, and to create awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture in Kentucky communities as well as around the globe.

“This is an investment in Nelson County’s foreseeable, sustainable, future: the young farmers”
