Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Nutrition Education Program partnered alongside an elementary school through its Corporative Extension Office to teach LEAP. Literacy, Eating, Activity, for Primary which targets children first through third graders in staying healthy, being physically active, increasing fruit, vegetable, low-fat dairy, and whole grains. The CDC states that Kentucky is rated 5th highest in obesity and 17% of that number represent children. The NEP assistant taught the children for a total of 6 hours through 1 hour sessions for 6 weeks. The children were read a LEAP book, given a healthy snack prepared from the LEAP curriculum recipe, and then given a physical activity incentive tool to exercise while in the gym class. For example; freesbe, jump rope, hacky sack, and football.  81% of children had an increased level of understanding the difference between fruit and vegetable. 88% had a better understanding of what a healthy snack included. And out of all the 3 classes every child tried each healthy snack. All children parent’s received the LEAP newsletter which included the healthy snack given that day. NEP assistant met by the children and parents within the county after LEAP had been taught at the school, commented how much the children enjoyed the class and all the “awesome food”. “You’re the healthy food lady”, “the kids love your recipes”, stated a LEAP participants mom!
