Describe the Issue or Situation.
The Mountain Comprehensive Care Greenhouse program and the Magoffin County High School Foods Class have both been looking for opportunities for their participants to learn about how to prepare healthy foods. Both groups contacted me about attending the Cooking through the Calendar series.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
The Mountain Comprehensive Greenhouse participants have attended, along with other regular participants, on two occasions. The Magoffin County High School Foods class will be attending the upcoming class with 19 participants. The two partnerships have strengthened the program significantly, giving an opportunity for me to share information about healthy food preparation and nutrition.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
The Mountain Comprehensive Care clients are all physically and mentally challenged adults. The students from Magoffin County High School are teens, who have a great interest in food preparation and nutrition.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
Fifty percent of the Mountain Comprehensive Green House clients have expressed that they have used the recipes at their homes, with the help of another adult. The teacher of the Foods class at Magoffin County High School has been provided with SNAP incentive items to help with cooking tools for her classroom, and has been given SNAP recipes to distribute to her students. She plans to bring her students to each month's lesson to learn more skills to prepare healthy foods. She and the principal have both expressed their overwhelming thanks for our support and for the upcoming educational opportunities.
