Success StoryRegional Pasture Field Day

Regional Pasture Field Day

Author: Christopher Schalk

Planning Unit: Barren County CES

Major Program: Plant Production and Management

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production & Management

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

South Central KY is the center of the beef and dairy industry in KY.  The topography and soil type lend itself very well to the production of high quality forage and pasture.  Farmers continue to make improvements including fertility, improved seed varieties, and weed control.  New products and technology are additional tools for farmers

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

Extension agent of UK & KSU joined worked together to host a pasture field day that featured 2 new pasture weed herbicides.  The agents partnered with UK forage specialist, and Corteva Ag.  A Barren County producer was identified and agreed to be a cooperator and host for the field day.  Ag Agents and Corteva representative planned for 2 different fields to feature 2 different products with an untreated check in each field.  The plots were sprayed and then field day was planned to showcase the results.  The field day would also featured UK forage and beef specialist sharing successes that they helped achieve on this particular farm.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

62 producers and ag business professionals attended the field day

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

Attendees were exposed to management practices in weed control, grazing, reproduction management, and forage nutritional analysis.

To date the following outcomes have been noted (4 weeks post field day):

13 attendees have reached out to agents for more information on chemical product featured

10 attendees have requested farm visits to evaluate weed pressure, and grazing management

4 attendees have either expressed interest or submitted forage samples for analysis

8 attendees have reached out GPS technology used for application in plots

6 attendees have requested more programs like this in the future
