Planning Unit: Plant and Soil Sciences
Major Program: Tobacco
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Describe the Issue or Situation.
In the past 5 years there has been a significant increase in the number of Amish tobacco farmers moving to Kentucky. Although many have some experience growing tobacco, they are not familiar with best practices for tobacco production in Kentucky.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
Special efforts have been made to make farm visits to new Amish tobacco farms to diagnose problems and provide information to improve tobacco production and profitability. As Amish growers often to not have phones where they can be contacted, tobacco specialists need to make regular visits to their farms to observe production and provide expertise.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
11 new Amish tobacco farms were visited to provide tobacco production guidance in 2024 and 2025.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
Amish growers did not complete surveys or other evaluation tools, but were appreciative of assistance and guidance received.
