While many farm families in Kentucky represent proud, multi-generational legacies, there's a growing wave of new individuals-who may not have a family background in agriculture, but are eager to launch their own farming operations. Recognizing this need, the Kentucky Farm Launch Program was developed to provide intensive training and support for beginning farmers as they take their first steps into the industry. 

Funded through a USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grant and led by Dr. Krista Jacobsen (University of Kentucky, Department of Horticulture), the program brings together a strong team of collaborators across the college of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, as well as industry partners such as the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office and KCARD. 

Kentucky Farm Launch is a 9-month, hands on program designed to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills in either livestock or horticulture production systems. The livestock track focuses on beef cattle, small ruminants, and poultry-emphasizing best practices in animal husbandry, nutrition, health, and business planning. 

Each week, participants attend in-person sessions covering key management concepts, all while gaining access to industry mentors and Extension professionals who help guide their progress. What makes this program unique is the diversity of participants: some already have access to land and livestock and are working to refine their management strategies, while others are still in the lanning stages, searching for land and building their production systems from the ground up. 

Though the program is still in its initial cohort, early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Participants consistently report that the sessions are practical, informative, and a valuable use of their time. Several have expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect with professionals and peers who are invested n their success, nothing that the support and encouragement they've received has  been invaluable. 

As Kentucky continues to prioritize farm viability and rural economic development, the Kentucky Farm Launch Program stands out as a promising model for cultivating the next generation of farmers- equipping them not only with technical skills, but also with the confidence and community needed to build resilient and profitable operations.
