Plan of Work: Enhance Life Skills and Workforce Development
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Caldwell County is a diverse agriculture county with a large number of young farmers and youth interested in farming. In recognition of the vital role agriculture plays in the community and the importance of youth participation in farming, the Caldwell/Lyon County Cattlemen's Association has, for the second consecutive year, offered the Youth Agriculture Incentive Program. This initiative is made possible through the Ag Development Council, which received funding from the Kentucky Agriculture Development Fund under the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy. The Cattlemen's Association was responsible for managing applications and disbursing program funds. For 2019, the program was approved over $15,000 in funding, which was distributed among 17 youth applicants, each receiving approximately $850 each. About 50% of the previous year’s participants reapplied in 2024, demonstrating continued interest and engagement in agricultural development. Youth investments supported by the program included: small animal projects, large animal projects, fencing improvements, showmanship training, and supplies. These areas not only provide practical, hands-on experience for young participants but also support the long-term sustainability and diversification of agriculture in Caldwell County.
