Success StoryPost Weaning Value Added Program

Post Weaning Value Added Program

Author: Shane Bogle

Planning Unit: Caldwell County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Production Agriculture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As demand for weaned calves continues to grow, the cattle market is placing more emphasis on animals with a known health and management history. In Kentucky, however, most calves are still weaned on the trailer on their way to local sale barns.  To help Kentucky cow-calf producers make better marketing decisions and capture more return on investment, UK Department of Animal Sciences offered a new initiative: the Post Weaning Value Added Program (PVAP). This program is designed specifically for producers who have never marketed weaned calves or retained ownership through the feedlot phase. Caldwell Extension Partnered with Kevin Laurent UKREC beef associate to offer the program.  A Caldwell County cattle operation that has historically shipped calves at weaning, elected to enroll their calf crop in the program in 24-25.  52 head of calves were weaned, vaccinated, and fed 45 days.  Sale day the producer realized a net added value of $220 a head, plus a $750 PAVP program incentive.  Hands on education and demonstrations to Kentucky producers remains a vital part of what Extension does for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
