Major Program: Beef
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Less than 20% of beef cattle producers utilize pregnancy determination as part of their routine management. This educational opportunity is designed to teach the techniques of pregnancy determination to ANR Agents and beef cattle producers. This reporting period, we conducted three training sessions (RCARS, Pulaski County, Russell Co). Forty-two people attended these training sessions and learned these techniques of pregnancy determination. Three methods of pregnancy determination were taught: hand palpation, transrectal ultrasonography, and blood sampling. All 42 participants left with a working knowledge of both techniques and plan to incorporation them into their normal management protocol. A survey was conducted after the training and all 42 rated the class highly (5/5) and all 42 indicated they would use these techniques after the training (all 42 indicated “highly likely”). Determining pregnancy is valued at over $200-250 per cow return on investment.
