AI/Pregnancy Determination School - UK

Author: Leslie Anderson

Planning Unit: Animal and Food Sciences

Major Program: Beef

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Less than 20% of beef cattle producers utilize AI or pregnancy determination in their management protocol. This educational opportunity is designed to teach the techniques of artificial insemination and pregnancy determination to beef cattle producers. This reporting period, we conducted two AI/PD schools at the UK Beef Farm in Woodford County. Twenty-three cattle producers attending these two-day training sessions and learned these techniques of AI and pregnancy determination. Three methods of pregnancy determination were taught: hand palpation, transrectal ultrasonography, and blood sampling. All 23 participants left with a working knowledge of both techniques and plan to incorporation them into their normal management protocol. A survey was conducted after the training and all 23 rated the class highly (5/5) and all 23 indicated they would use these techniques after the training (all 23 indicated “highly likely”). Determining pregnancy is valued at over $200-250 per cow return on investment. Artificial insemination increases revenue $50-100 per cow.
