Boyle - Lincoln - Powell JC Training Weekend

Author: Emilee Bryant

Planning Unit: Powell County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Improving Leadership Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

4-H summer camps rely heavily on teen Junior Counselors (JCs) to lead younger campers and assist in daily camp operations. However, across multiple rural counties, Extension staff observed that many first-time JCs lacked the leadership skills, preparedness, and confidence needed to be effective in their roles. Without proper training, JCs were more likely to become overwhelmed, and camper experiences suffered due to inconsistent supervision and engagement. Extension professionals recognized the need for a unified, high-quality training program that could serve multiple counties, promote consistency, and build a stronger youth leadership pipeline.

In response, Extension agents from 3 counties collaborated to design and implement a Junior Counselor Training Program. This regional effort was developed with support from:

4-H Extension agents, Veteran 4-H adult volunteers, former senior counselors, and community partners.

The program consisted of a 2-day overnight event, combining hands-on training, team-building activities, leadership development, and emergency preparedness. Content included:

  • Youth development and camper behavior management
  • Conflict resolution and peer leadership
  • Activity planning and group facilitation

All participants in this training shared they felt more prepared for the upcoming 2025 4-H Summer Camp week.
