Success StoryAdding Value to Cow-Calf Operations through Advance PVAP

Adding Value to Cow-Calf Operations through Advance PVAP

Author: Vicki Shadrick

Planning Unit: Webster County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Educational Opportunities for Livestock Producers

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In Kentucky, most calves are traditionally weaned during transport to sale barns, a practice that can lead to higher rates of sickness and death. Research shows that preconditioning calves on the farm can reduce these issues by up to 74%, significantly increasing their value. The Advanced Post Weaning Value-Added Program (PVAP) is aimed at producers who have historically weaned and preconditioned calves prior to marketing. By documenting the best management practices and economic results of producers who are experienced in preconditioning, more effective educational programs can be developed to encourage a more widespread adoption of these practices. The Webster County ANR agent worked with UK Extension Beef Specialists to identify a local producer to participate in the program.

Thirty-one producers across the commonwealth have participated in the Advanced PVAP program since July 2024.  A cow-calf producer in Webster County had 18 heifers and 19 steers (37 total) in the program.  According to the Advanced PVAP Closeout report, by weaning and preconditioning these calves for 75 days, this producer increased the value of these 37 calves by $12,306.68. After subtracting the cost of feed, vaccines, and interest ($7,331.21) the returns for preconditioning resulted in a net added value of $4,975.47 or $134.47 per head.
