As highly-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) spreads among all species of birds, the entire agricultural industry has a role in limiting its spread, whether a given producer has poultry or not. To help cattle producers understand how their actions could help limit the spread of HPAI, the four-county Highlands Beef Cattle Association hosted UK's Extension veterinarian for an educational session. The presentation covered the history of HPAI and its potential economic impact, then addressed how farmers could take action on their operations to minimize the potential for harboring wild and domesticated fowl that could spread the disease. Five Johnson County producers were in attendance, with all reporting a greater understanding of how they could support efforts to contain HPAI and minimize its impact.
