Author: Chasity Heck

Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Promote Safety, Health, Wellness and Good Nutrition

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to Kentucky by the Numbers Data 45.3% of Harlan County adults over the age of 18 have a BMI greater than or equal to 30, and 14.0% of Harlan County adults over the age of 20 have a diagnosis of diabetes.  39.6% of Harlan County adults over the age of 18 reported having no leisure-time activity.  To help combat these issues the Harlan County FCS agent implemented a 10-session program held at the Harlan County Extension Depot.

11 participants attended “Lose to Win”, a 10-week series aimed at promoting healthier eating habits, increasing physical activity, mindfulness, and portion control.  The program was based on the University of Ky. Weight the Reality Series Curriculum.  Participants had the opportunity to reflect on their current eating and exercise habits and develop a plan to help them form better habits.

Participants lost a total of 18.9 pounds over the course of the program.  81% of participants reported an increase in the number of fruits and vegetables eaten daily.  81% of participants also reported increasing their physical activity levels.  One participant stated, “I never knew how to eat healthy before this class, I plan to continue doing what I have learned”.
