Many young people today have limited opportunities to learn formal social skills such as proper table manners, respectful conversation, and dining etiquette. This gap can lead to challenges in social settings, especially in professional or formal environments in life. The need to build confidence and etiquette in youth became a priority identified through conversations with one local organization.
In response to this need, the Bullitt County FCS Agent partnered with the local Rainbow Girls chapter and Judge Executive Office to offer an etiquette class at the State leadership event of Rainbow Girls. It was designed to teach youth formal manners and proper behavior in social and dining settings. The class included hands-on learning through roleplay and practice allowing youth to then use these skills at the rest of the conference.
Seventy youth, ranging in age from 9 to 16, and their chapter leaders participated in the program. These students represented a diverse group of learners, many of whom had never experienced a formal dining setting before. The program offered a valuable opportunity to build life skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Post-program leader feedback indicated a significant increase in participants’ confidence, proper table manners and understanding of proper etiquette. One leader reported 100% of participants were able to correctly demonstrate the use of utensils, table setting knowledge, and appropriate behavior throughout the remainder of the 3 day conference. She stated she saw the girls exhibit "kind, respectful and considerate" behavior - much more than they had before the program. At the end of the lesson, two girls proceeded to apply their new knowledge of etiquette by giving a handshake and “Thank-You” to the leader of the program. One shook hands and thanked the FCS Extension agent, excitedly telling her she would use this lesson for the rest of her life!
