In 2025 The Bullitt County Extension office began partnering with a local food bank and distribution site, The Turn Around Center is located in the southern part of the county. As a non-profit, The Turn Around Center, uses volunteers to provide food boxes and a hot meal to those in need. Over 500 individuals and families use this food distribution center and the weekly meals served.
The Family and Consumer Science department gave out recipes using the food placed in the monthly "food box". On a separate week of the month the agent and program assistant would prepare a recipe using food being distributed, give a mini talk and offer taste testing to those who came to pick up fresh produce. Over 50% of those tasting the recipe reported they intended to make the recipe because it used what they were given and tasted very good!
Through this work, a new partnership was developed with the school system to help the 50 families and children dealing with food insecurity who were displaced by the February flooding. The school social worker joined the advisory council for Family & Consumer Sciences and there are ongoing plans continue to address the needs of those children.
