Success Story4H Programs

4H Programs

Author: Andy Mills

Planning Unit: Meade County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Financial Management, Soft Skill Development, Human Development, Enhance Life Skills and Build Consumer Awareness

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Since the 4H Youth Development agent transferred in March, this ANR agent has worked diligently with the 4H program in the areas of livestock and camping.  Over 90 youth are involved in these 2 areas of 4H so parents and youth were concerned without an agent these programs would get overlooked or done improperly.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

Immediately, the ANR and FCS agents collaborated with the 4H Council and assured them the programs would continue with the quality of standards expected.  4H Speeches and demonstrations contest was organized and performed with volunteers being secured with more participants than usual, 27.  A plan was developed with the leaders and parents to assure the country ham project was continued.  This ANR agent met with school teachers to continue school enrichment education mainly with the chick incubation project. This ANR agent also met with 4H livestock leaders to help them understand the proper policy and procedures for the livestock programs as well as gather information from them for program improvements.

Four different meetings and orientations were held with campers, counselors and parents about the upcoming scheduled 4H Camp.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

Fifty five 4H Livestock youth and Thirty seven 4H camp youth and counselors were involved with most of the 4H meetings held.  Six school teachers were involved in the incubation project.  Twenty seven youths and their families and volunteers were involved in the speeches and demonstrations.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

Evaluations and personal face to face contact with parents and youths show that the short term impact in over 80% of the children that went to camp gain confidence in socialization as well as knowledge in the areas in which they had classes.  All speech and demonstration participants learned the importance of public speaking as well as being a better more effective communicator.  Livestock project participants are still in the working stages of their projects but have indicated their knowledge of animal husbandry has increased.
