The Bracken County FCS along with the Bracken FRYSC Office collaborated with Taylor Elementary to offer a Kindergarten Readiness program for the first time in the county. This program’s main goal was to expose kindergarten age children and their parents to the school system and help children succeed in kindergarten and beyond. It was grant funded through the United Way. When offering this program we asked counties close to us and was told they had not had good attendance. We had a great turnout with 31 different family’s participating in the program. For the first session, we had almost 100 people and an average of 55 people per session. The program was 6 sessions in length. Each session consisted of family mealtime, parent lesson, and family activity. The lesson topics consisted of building relationships with your child, language skills, nutrition and health, how children learn and routines and learning on the go. When surveyed at the end of the program parents stated that they became comfortable and familiar with the school system. They thought this would help their children when it came time to go to school. Parents also said they learned many hands-on activities to do with their children at home and they felt more prepared for when their child started school.
