Eden Shale Farm Tour

Author: Gary Hamilton

Planning Unit: Montgomery County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Production and Economic Challenges Facing Livestock Producers

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Beef cattle production contributes a major economic impact to Montgomery County Agriculture. Cattle producers are always looking for ways to improve their farming efficiency and livestock facilities. The UK/KBN Eden Shale Farm is a demonstration farm that highlights many innovative practical ideas that beef cattle producers can adopt on their farms. To help our cattle producers see the Eden Shale Farm, the former Extension District 1 Agents organized a tour to highlight this educational facility. 60 producers attended this farm tour seeing and learning about more efficient farm layouts, heavy use area installation, fence line feeders, livestock water collection, fencing ideas and forage management. The speakers at this event included representatives and Extension specialists from the Kentucky Cattlemen's Association, The Kentucky Beef Network and The University of Kentucky. Surveyed producers from Montgomery County that attended expressed 100% satisfaction with what they saw and the knowledge they gained. 50% of those in attendance have taken ideas learned about at this event and have incorporated them into their own operations with the help of the C.A.I.P. Cost-Share Program.
