Market Day with Diversion Program Participants

Author: Amber Dotson

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotions

Outcome: Initial Outcome

When asked to rank priority issues, Bath Countians place youth-related concerns at the top of the list. In 2024, the top three priorities indicated by Bath County citizens were 1. Minimizing youth substance use, 2. Strengthening youth workforce readiness, and 3. Youth life skill training opportunities. Existing methods of addressing these issues are county diversion programs. Diversion programs are designed to redirect students under 18 who have taken a misstep, allowing them to avoid a formal court record and helping them stay on a positive path. Some offenses that may lead to students taking part in a diversion program include underage use of tobacco or alcohol, truancy, or any actions considered criminal if committed by an adult.

Bath County 4-H partnered with Court Designated Workers from Bath and surrounding counties to provide nutrition programming as part of a diversion program. Participants toured the Bath County Farmer's Market, spoke with producers about local produce and value-added products, and prepared and ate lunch together. Lunch consisted of 3 SNAP-Ed approved recipes: Burger Bowls, Parmesan Carrot Chips, and Summer Fruit Salad.

Seven participants of varying ages attended the program. At the conclusion of the program, participants and Court Designated Workers expressed their satisfaction with the program. According to oral accounts, participants felt increasingly comfortable in the kitchen throughout the course of the program. Participants were able to safely handle knives, operate a stovetop, and follow a recipe to prepare a nutritious meal. This program also serves as an educational opportunity that progresses participants through the diversion program, teaching them life skills while encouraging teamwork. Since the conclusion of the program, Court Designated Workers have been in contact with the facilitating Extension Agent to arrange for future occurrences, indicating the value and success of the program in addressing youth needs.
