Youth Crochet Camp Sparks Leadership and Club Interest

Author: Allison Croslin

Planning Unit: Graves County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Developing Youth and Adult Leaders in the Community

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Youth in Graves County have been looking for more opportunities to express themselves through creative and artistic outlets. Over the past year, there has been a growing interest in classes that surround around fiber arts such as crochet, hand embroidery, etc. In response to these request, a crochet day camp for youth was developed.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

This day camp became popular very fast. There were two community members that reached out wanting to help. One is a parent of a 4-H'er, and the other is a consistent member of the FCS Crochet group. Youth were able to sign up for a class based on skill level, beginner or advanced. In the beginner class, youth worked on learning basic crochet stitches and the mechanics of crocheting. They made mini stuffed animals. In the advanced class, they worked on refining their skills and made their own backpacks. The advanced group of crocheters volunteered to help with the beginner class. This was a great way for youth others.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

There were 16 total youth attending, and 2 volunteers. 10 youth attended attended the beginner class, and 6 youth attending the advanced class.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

As an initial outcome, youth that were in the advanced got to practice communication and leadership while also being able to talk about something that they are interested in which fostered new friendship sand new developing leadership skills. 10 of the participants said that they would like to join other programs, and 6 of the youth have started planning a crochet club! The two volunteers that helped were first time volunteers, and they have expressed interest in being regular volunteers for a crochet club!
