Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Enhancing Production through Sustainable Agriculture and Marketing Strategies

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Beef Quality Care and Assurance is a program that certifies producers in best management practices for beef production.  While every year the Christian County Extension Service host classes for producers, in the spring of 2025 they partnered with local 4-H, FFA, and Cattlemen’s organizations to host a youth Beef Quality Care and Assurance (BQCA) training.  This BQCA focused on training 4-H and FFA youth of all the aspects of cattle production.   With over 75 youth participants and multiple stations the event was a day long educational opportunity that provided the kids hands on opportunities to learn about beef production.

Stations included: cattle handling, chute side training, ear tagging, ear implants, genetics, and parasitology.

Upon the completion of the hands-on stations the participant’s knowledge was tested with three written exams that surveyed what they learned throughout the day.  At the end of the event all the youth were certified in BQCA and passed industry standards through their high school curriculum.
