A new element was added to my livestock economics Extension program in 2025 that has greatly extended the reach of my program and provided another opportunity for clientele to receive very current market information and analysis. Every third Friday afternoon, I record the Weekly Livestock Market Update with Mehgan Grebner at Brownfield Ag News. Colleagues at the University of Tennessee and Mississippi State University also do this in rotation such that every week video content is available. The videos are relatively casual and recorded in a conversational style. Each video begins by recapping cattle market trends for the week and then discusses other relevant topics such as USDA reports, management strategies, prices risk management opportunities, etc. By recording these weekly, content remains very current and discussion topics can be responsive to market changes.
While I certainly value in-person programming and will continue to utilize it as a way to educate clientele, the value of video content is becoming increasingly clear. Since December of 2024, the average number of Youtube views for my updates has exceeded 2,600 individuals with a total reach of 18,436 through June 2025 for my weeks alone. Reaching this many individuals face-to-face with a 15–25-minute Extension program would be both expensive and time consuming. However, it has been made relatively simple through this format. It has also had the added advantage of allowing me to reach stakeholders outside Kentucky and raise my profile as an Extension Economist in the US.
