Timely information continues to become increasingly important for livestock clientele in a rapidly changing market. To that end, Cattle Market Notes Weekly continues to be the written centerpiece of my Extension program as it combines timely market information with regularly written marketing and management education. This weekly publication goes out every Monday afternoon and is a collaboration between Extension livestock economists at the University of Kentucky, the University of Arkansas and Mississippi State University. Each issue includes an educational article focused on a cattle marketing or management topic, along with related graphics, price tables, and the most recent drought monitor. James Mitchell, Josh Maples, and I write articles on a rotating basis. Through this collaboration, I write a cattle market article every three weeks, but clientele receive an article on a weekly basis. The direct email distribution list for Cattle Market Notes Weekly now exceeds 2,300 unique emails and direct reach exceeded 100,000 from July 2024 to June 2023.
While the direct impact of Cattle Market Notes Weekly is large and continues to grow, the second order reach is even greater. As an illustration, Cattle Markets Notes Weekly articles are included in the Ohio Beef Newsletter, which goes out to over 5,100 individuals. Greater still, Farm Progress, Beef Magazine, and Feedlot Magazine also pick up most of these articles and publish them in their online issues. While there is no way to know how many people these outlets reach, it would likely well exceed the direct reach and also speaks to the quality of the publication.
