Success StoryGrowing Garlic

Growing Garlic

Author: Jessica Hopkins

Planning Unit: Harrison County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Health, Nutrition, and Wellness

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation
Many home gardeners in Harrison County are interested in expanding their fall and winter gardening activities, yet lack the knowledge or confidence to grow less traditional crops like garlic. Garlic, though well-suited for Kentucky’s climate, is often overlooked due to unfamiliarity with proper planting techniques, care, and harvesting practices.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable)
In response to this interest, the Harrison County Extension Horticulture Agent hosted a "Growing Garlic" class on October 17, 2025. To accommodate varying schedules, the class was offered twice—once in the morning and once in the evening. Participants received instruction on garlic types, site selection, planting techniques, mulching, watering, fertilization, pest and disease management, topping, and proper harvesting and storage methods. Each attendee also received approximately four bulbs of German Red garlic, a flavorful hardneck variety, to plant at home.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience
A total of 23 participants attended the class sessions. Attendees represented a mix of home gardeners, beginner growers, and small-scale producers interested in diversifying their gardens and learning new skills.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact
Following the program, several participants contacted the Extension office to share the success of their garlic crops, with many expressing excitement over their first harvest. These follow-ups demonstrate not only successful knowledge transfer but also an increase in participant confidence and enthusiasm for trying new crops. By providing both education and planting materials, the class empowered attendees to immediately apply what they learned, resulting in tangible success and community engagement in fall gardening.
