The LaRue County Cooperative Extension Service collaborated with LaRue County High School and eight local businesses to conduct the American Private Enterprise Program (known as APES) for 20 high school juniors. The APES Program taught participants about business and economics and included presentations from six local business leaders and tours of two local manufacturing plants, SouthEast DME and Nationwide Uniform. Participants were educated about entrepreneurship and how the United States economy works. Local donations totaling $1200 helped to make the program possible. At the Kentucky Youth Seminar, top participants earn scholarships. Over the past seven years, LaRue County has had 11 scholarship winners totaling $9,000. In a post evaluation, 92 percent of participants found the APES Program to be beneficial because it provides information that is not taught in their regular school curriculum. After participating in the APES program, 40 percent of participants are considering starting their own business in the future. In 2018, two youth and one adult volunteer attended the Kentucky Youth Seminar held at the University of Kentucky in June.  One past APES participant speaks very highly of the program saying "APES and Kentucky Youth Seminar helped me learn about working on a Cooperative or Corporate Board.  I learned about business and economics and hope to one day be able to start my own business."
