Describe the Issue or Situation.

In today's economy, the ability to manage personal finances is an essential life skill—yet many children reach adulthood without foundational knowledge of budgeting, saving, or responsible spending. Educators and parents at Meadowthorpe Elementary recognized the need to introduce financial literacy concepts at an earlier age to help students develop smart money habits and decision-making skills before they encounter real-world financial responsibilities.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

To meet this need, the Dollars and Sense program was brought to 4th and 5th grade classrooms at Meadowthorpe Elementary. This hands-on financial literacy initiative was delivered through a partnership between the school, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and several parent and community volunteers. The program used age-appropriate lessons and interactive simulations to teach students how to earn, save, spend wisely, and stay within a budget. Activities included budgeting scenarios, needs vs. wants discussions, and real-life financial role-plays.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

The program served 85 students in the 4th and 5th grades. These students represented diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and for many, it was their first exposure to formal financial education. Additionally, 12 parents and community partners volunteered their time to assist with activities, model good financial practices, and share real-world insights, further enriching the learning experience.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

Evaluation data collected through pre- and post-program assessments showed a measurable increase in students' financial knowledge and confidence. After completing the program:

94% of students could accurately explain the difference between needs and wants, compared to only 62% before the program.

89% demonstrated an understanding of how to create and follow a simple budget, an increase from 48% at the start.

92% reported they now think twice before spending money, indicating a positive shift in decision-making and financial awareness.

Teachers noted that students were more engaged in math and problem-solving tasks, and parents shared stories of children starting to save allowance money or making thoughtful spending choices at home. By equipping students with practical financial skills early, the Dollars and Sense program helped lay the groundwork for lifelong financial responsibility and empowered Meadowthorpe students to make smarter choices both now and in the future.
