Across Kentucky, agricultural landowners, farmers, and Extension professionals often face uncertainty when trying to determine the fair market value of agricultural land and appropriate cash rental rates. Recognizing the need for reliable, up-to-date data, Kentucky’s Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Extension Agents collaborated with Dr. Greg Halich from the University of Kentucky’s Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Department of Agricultural Economics.
To address this challenge, 71 ANR Agents from across the Commonwealth, including Grayson County, conducted surveys with local landowners, farmers, PVAs, and real estate professionals. The goal was to collect firsthand information about current land values and rental rates in their counties. In Grayson County, Extension staff played an active role in surveying individuals and professionals, contributing to the accuracy and credibility of the data.
A total of 70 usable surveys were submitted and compiled by Dr. Halich. The results are now being used to update the widely used publication AEC 97: Land Value and Cash Rent Survey. This updated resource will include data organized by regions and subregions, making it easier for users to find information specific to their area.
By contributing to this project, Grayson County helped ensure that farmers, landowners, and ag professionals have access to clear, localized, and research-backed information. This effort empowers decision-makers to negotiate fair land rental agreements, assess investment opportunities, and support the financial sustainability of Kentucky agriculture.
