Exploring Careers with 4-H

Author: Rachael Wong

Planning Unit: McCracken County CES

Major Program: Workforce Preparation – 4-H Youth Development

Plan of Work: McCracken County 4-H Leadership through SET and Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This school year (2024-2025), McCracken County 4-H took learning beyond the classroom through our "Exploring Careers with 4-H" events during their Fall and Spring Breaks. Designed to inspire and educate youth about real-world career opportunities, these events gave 4-H members hands-on experiences in a variety of fields, thanks to strong partnerships with local professionals and businesses.

Youth explored careers in Aviation, Law Enforcement, Legal professions, Agriculture, Space Science, Engineering, and Marketing. These specific areas weren’t chosen at random—they were selected based on feedback and requests from 4-H participants themselves. Youth shared their interests during the school 4-H club meetings with McCracken County 4-H agents.

During the events, participants had the unique opportunity to engage directly with professionals working in these fields. They asked thoughtful questions about what it takes to pursue these careers, what education or training is required, and how to gain experience and make connections. The chance to hear real-world advice and personal stories made these sessions especially impactful and inspiring.

From touring the Barkley Regional Airport’s Fixed-Based Operator to engaging with courtroom professionals and exploring agricultural technology, youth gained valuable insight into potential career paths and the skills needed to pursue them.

Local businesses and community leaders played a critical role in making these experiences meaningful and memorable. Their willingness to share expertise and open their doors gave 4-H’ers a unique look at the day-to-day realities of each profession.

As one youth participant shared, “I didn’t know so much math was required to be a cop.”

By providing these youth-requested, career-focused experiences during school breaks, McCracken County 4-H is helping young people build career awareness, grow their professional networks, and gain confidence in their futures.
