Farm Family Fun Field Day Encourages Healthy Exploration Through New Food Experiences

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Many individuals in rural communities, including the local Amish population, may have limited exposure to certain nutritious foods and beverages, such as smoothies made with fruits and vegetables. At community events, introducing these foods in a fun and engaging way can create opportunities to improve dietary variety and nutrition awareness.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

During the Farm Family Field Day in Fleming County, the Cooperative Extension Service hosted a nutrition-focused booth that featured smoothie sampling using a smoothie bike. The activity aimed to encourage families and community members to try healthy options in a hands-on, interactive setting. The event was held in collaboration with local agricultural partners and aimed at promoting both physical activity and nutritious eating.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

The event attracted 54 smoothie bike participants from the local farming community, including children, adults, and members of the Amish population. One male Amish participant stood out as he tried a smoothie for the first time and expressed how much he enjoyed it.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

Evaluation through participant feedback and observation indicated that the interactive format led to increased willingness to try new foods. One intermediate outcome observed was a male Amish attendee who tried a smoothie for the first time and stated he loved it. Which demonstrates a behavioral change and openness to incorporating new, healthier foods. This small yet meaningful outcome reflects a shift in food acceptance and awareness.
