Young Adult Students

Author: Mary Elaine Burton

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

A lot of young adults aged 18-25 in Johnson County are students, most of whom lead a sedentary lifestyle most of the week, with an obesity rate being 18.8%. After gathering this information, the Johnson County Senior SNAP-Ed Assistant teamed up with the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Center, who has an average enrollment of 120 young adults who fall into this age group. The Assistant worked along with a Life Skills class where 3 out of 7 students had been diagnosed with some type of chronic illness while others struggled with weight and self-care.

During a seven-week program focused on lessons deciphering nutrition labels, meal planning, and strategies for limiting sodium, fats, and sugars, participants also engaged in physical activity. The program showcased quick and easy meal preparation methods and emphasized the importance of controlling food ingredients through homemade meals. Each participant set goals for reducing levels and achieving weight loss, and by the end of the seven-week course, all 7 students reported making significant improvements in their health, with an 86% increase of exercise for at least 30 minutes or more a day.  Notably, two students initiated a daily evening walking routine together, challenging each other to reach their goals and establish new ones along the way.
