Beginner Dulcimer Workshop series

Author: Anne Stephens

Planning Unit: Greenup County CES

Major Program: Artistic & Essential Skill Development

Plan of Work: Promoting Leadership and Community Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Kentucky Revised Statute 2.103 named the Appalachia Dulcimer as the official state instrument on June 21, 2001. Rail City Dulcimer Society has been an active, volunteer led, community club with tri-state membership, based in Greenup County since 2003. They meet weekly for rehearsals at the Greenup County Public Library, Flatwoods branch. Greenup Arts and Rail City have partnered on multiple events over the past fifteen years and many of the club members have become involved in Extension programming. Because of this cultivated relationship and a change in leadership of the club, the ties between the two organizations have become stronger.

Due to increased outreach, leader Gina Woods recognized a need for education focused on beginning dulcimer players and brought that request to Greenup Arts for help. The club secured 17 student-friendly instruments and rights to use materials: “Mountain Dulcimer for Children and the Young at Heart” by Danny Shepherd, 2008. www.mountaildulcimerforchildren.com  A monthly beginner class started on May 17, 2025 with 9 students. The group quickly grew to 16 in June. Some students brought their own dulcimer, and some borrowed from the club. A local luthier who was part of the Extension program, Handcrafted Weekend at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park Lodge, was happy to share this opportunity with the people who purchased instruments from him with the intent of learning to play.

Gina said, “We are so excited to be able to help beginners learn to play so that they can eventually join our club. Club meetings are focused on preparing for performances which makes it impossible to help beginners – but we want them to join us and have success at playing the dulcimer! This partnership is perfect for us.”
