Land Value and Cash Rent Survey

Author: Brandon Sears

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Encourage and Promote Sustainable Agriculture Practices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In Kentucky, agricultural landowners, farmers, Extension Agents for Agriculture and Natural Resources, and other interested residents are in need of a reliable source of information for determining the value of agricultural land and cash rental rates.

Many UK Agricultural and Natural Resource agents, including myself worked with Dr. Greg Halich from the Martin Gatton College of Agriculture Food and Environment, Agricultural Economics Department to collect information from landowners regarding existing cash rental rates for agricultural land and PVA offices, real estate agents, and individual landowners to ascertain current agricultural land values across the state.

Seventy one Agents for Agriculture and Natural Resources surveyed  individual landowners, farmers,  PVA s  and real estate agents/ auction companies from those counties represented. I submitted information to the group with Madison County values. I also served on the agent planning committee for this project as well as a panel of agents that discussed this endeavor at the KY Farm Bureau Annual meeting ANR agent in-service update.

In total, seventy usable surveys were submitted to Dr. Halich. The information from those surveys will be compiled and used to update the publication AEC 97 Land Value and Cash Rent Survey. That publication will consist of aggregated information that will be broken into regions and sub regions so that persons utilizing the information can hone in on the specific region/sub-region  that they are interested in. It is our hope this publication will be available for public use later this summer.
