Isaiah House Men’s Recovery Center Increases Food Safety Knowledge by 68%

Author: Laura Milburn

Planning Unit: Washington County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

At Isaiah House Men’s Recovery Center, transformation isn’t just personal—it’s practical. In early 2025, the Center partnered with the Washington County Extension Service’s Nutrition Education Program to offer hands-on nutrition and food safety training to its residents. The goal: help men in recovery build healthier habits and gain skills that support their recovery and, in their lives, to come.

The results exceeded expectations.

By the end of the program, participants showed a 68% increase in Food Safety knowledge, backed by pre- and post-assessments. From proper food handling and sanitation to cross-contamination prevention and temperature control, residents didn’t just learn the information—they mastered it.

This wasn’t just another class. It was a confidence-builder. Residents left with the tools to make smarter food choices and handle food safely—at home and on the job.

This success aligns with Isaiah House’s broader mission: to heal lives and rebuild futures through recovery, purpose, and practical skills. The nutrition education program is an ongoing part of their vocational training.
