Pike County FCS Brings Nutrition and Creativity to Life at Belfry Area Art Camp

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Fruits and vegetables play a vital role in children’s healthy growth and brain development. According to a 2021 study conducted by the CDC, 1 in 3 children did not eat fruit daily. In response to this need, Pike County Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) partnered with the Belfry Area Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) to deliver a vibrant and educational experience at the annual Art Camp.

With 58 enthusiastic youth in attendance, the event was a colorful blend of creativity, learning, and healthy fun. FCS led an engaging, fruit-themed lesson that introduced participants to a variety of fruits—some familiar, others new—and encouraged them to explore their artistic talents in a unique way.

Youth learned about the nutritional benefits of fruits and then used them as both inspiration and medium for their artwork. Participants arranged colorful fruit pieces into imaginative designs, sparking both creativity and curiosity.

The highlight for many was the opportunity to sample a rainbow of fruits, expanding their palates and discovering new favorites.

By combining nutrition education with hands-on art activities, the camp not only enriched the minds of young participants but also planted seeds for lifelong healthy choices.
