The garden club started 3 years ago with little success as far as production. The members learned many things, mostly where a lot of planning is done, but very little goes as planned. They also learned where food comes from and how to grow their own food. The weather did not cooperate at all. Every time we would get the garden ready, it would rain for days. When we could plant, the garden was not ready to plant. Some success was seen, but very little produce. We had lots of flowers that we sold at the Farmer's Market. Well, this year is a different story. The ground was ready for planting thanks to a community volunteer.
We wrote a grant to buy raised beds. We are going to compare raised bed production to in the ground production. We have joined Farmer's Market and looking forward to a better year.
The garden club along with their parents have our garden planted. We purchased 4 handicapped raised beds where we will invite assisted living adults to plant and raise their vegetable of choice. Really, I cannot tell you how many participants we will have due to selling at the Farmer's Market where the members will sell their produce to the community. They have learned communication and marketing skills as well as profit and loss financial statements.
From the raised lettuce bed to the table. This young man is quite the gardener. He loves planting, hoeing, pulling weeds and harvesting and eating the produce.
