Author: Thomas Miller

Planning Unit: Ballard County CES

Major Program: Agriculture and Extension Leadership Development

Plan of Work: Leadership Ballard

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The 4-H Agents of the 4 river counties took the lead in starting a WAVE Ag Leadership Program for teens from the four River counties of Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman and Fulton.  They have a day of programming in each county to teach the young leaders leadership skills and about agriculture and its impact in our area.

The 4-H leaders partnered with WAVE Ag, a group started in the 4 river counties to make ag a priority and focus the efforts of the 4 counties in promotion and outreach for agriculture.

Nine teens from the 4 river counties attended the leadership day in Ballard County.  The day started with a lesson in proper table etiquette presented by Tom Miller, Ballard ANR Agent and Sarah Drysdale, Ballard FCS Agent.  After the etiquette lesson a discussion was help an how farmers could be leaders in the community.

The teens then went on 2 farm tours.  The first was to JAP Farms, where Allan Pace, Past President of the Ky Soybean Association and current member of the KY Soybean Promotion Board discussed his leadership opportunities with the Ky Soybean Board and the National Soy Transportation Cabinet.  The teens the moved to Denton Farms where Neil Denton, current KY Small Grain Growers President and member of the KY State Ag Development Board talked on leadership activities and keeping the farm running at home while attending meeting across the state and trying to keep two off farm businesses running.

The day ended with a lunch back at the Ballard County Extension Office, where the participants could practice their new etiquette skills in a semi formal setting.
