Success StoryProgressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day

Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day

Author: John Tucker

Planning Unit: Hickman County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Creating agricultural knowledge and improving agricultural and environmental practices in Hickman County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Hickman County, is deeply rooted in agricultural tradition. Since its founding, the county’s economy, culture, and community values have been shaped by generations of farm families. Agriculture remains a way of life, and many young residents are actively engaged in farming activities from an early age.

Recognizing the importance of equipping youth with the knowledge and skills to stay safe on the farm, the Hickman County Extension Office collaborated with Hickman County Schools, Hickman County FFA, and the Progressive Agriculture Foundation to host the Hickman County FFA Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day.

This year’s event marked the first time the Progressive Agriculture Foundation formally participated, enhancing the impact and reach of our annual safety program. With the support of 60 FFA student leaders, three Extension Agents, and a network of dedicated local businesses and community volunteers, we facilitated 12 hands-on safety stations focused on the following critical topics:

  1. ATV Safety
  2. Animal Handling
  3. Electrical Safety
  4. Farm Equipment Operation
  5. First Aid
  6. Hand Tool Safety
  7. Hearing Protection
  8. Lawn Equipment
  9. Sun Exposure
  10. Tractor Safety
  11. Weather Awareness

Held each October, the event serves all Kindergarten through 6th-grade students in Hickman County. In 2024, a total of 374 students participated, supported by 71 volunteers. Through our new partnership with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation, each student received a complimentary Farm Safety Day t-shirt and a take-home safety bag to reinforce the day’s lessons.

While the number of incidents or injuries potentially prevented by this event cannot be measured, the value of proactive education in preventing future accidents is undeniable. As organizers, we firmly believe that if one injury is prevented or one life is saved, the program has been a success.

This initiative reflects our continued commitment to cultivating a safer, smarter generation of young farmers in Hickman County—preserving our agricultural heritage while ensuring the well-being of those who will carry it forward.
