Empowering Taylor County through Personal Finances & Estate Planning: Transferring Cherished Possessions

Author: Kimberly Thomas

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Financial Education - General

Plan of Work: Improving the Health and Quality of Life for all Taylor County Citizens

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Recognizing the need for a "Personal Finances & Estate Planning" program series for the Taylor County community, the Taylor County Extension Council formed an Estate Planning Committee to address these needs. The Committee consisted of four members who assisted the Taylor County Extension Agents in planning the three-part series on estate planning, identifying stakeholders to make the series successful. This program's approach ensured that participants received a well-rounded education on personal finances and estate planning. By covering a wide range of topics, the program catered to diverse needs and interests within the community. Featuring guest speakers who were experts in their respective fields, the program provided participants with valuable insights and practical advice. This professional guidance helped demystify complex financial and legal concepts, making them easily understood by all.

During the second session held on March 31, 2025, the Taylor County Family and Consumer Science Agent, Kimberly Thomas, presented a segment on transferring cherished possessions. With 118 participants in attendance, this session emphasized the importance of planning for the distribution of non-titled property, which often holds sentimental value. Participants were encouraged to think about cherished possessions they had received and how they planned to pass these items on to their loved ones. The session covered legal considerations, such as the non-binding nature of lists and the inclusion of non-family members and provided guidance on documenting wishes through a Letter of Last Instruction.

Participants provided positive feedback, highlighting the program's relevance, clarity, and the practical benefits they gained. Many attendees reported feeling more confident in managing their finances and planning their estates. This program exemplifies the Taylor County Extension Council's commitment to addressing community needs through impactful and educational initiatives.
