Laugh and Learn Play Dates

Author: M. Elizabeth Coots

Planning Unit: Shelby County CES

Major Program: Child Development General

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Early childhood development is a critical foundation for lifelong learning and health. However, many Kentucky children enter kindergarten without the skills needed to succeed. In some counties, including Shelby, limited access to early learning resources and structured play opportunities can hinder development in key areas such as literacy, motor skills, and social-emotional growth. According to the Kentucky Kids Count Data Center, only 53% of children in Shelby County demonstrated kindergarten readiness, highlighting the need for targeted, community-based interventions that support families and young children.

To address this gap, the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent in Shelby County has continued the Laugh and Learn Playdates program in partnership with Northside Early Learning Center. This innovative program is designed to improve early childhood development and increase kindergarten readiness through structured play, parent-child interaction, and hands-on learning. Each session incorporates literacy, nutrition, physical activity, and social-emotional development, providing both children and caregivers with tools to support school readiness at home.

In total, 42 adults and 38 children participated in the Laugh and Learn Playdates program in Shelby County. The target audience included parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children ages 3–5. Many participants were seeking guidance on how to support their child’s development through everyday activities and routines.

As a result of participating in Laugh and Learn Playdates, 90% of parents reported that they read to their child(ren) at least three times a week. Additionally, 95% of parents or caregivers indicated that they use simple rules and routines in their home. Social development was also supported, with 85% of participants reporting that they involve their child(ren) in play with other children. In terms of physical activity and persistence, 92% of parents or caregivers said they encouraged their child to continue with tasks that were challenging. Furthermore, 85% of participants reported giving their child new opportunities to try unfamiliar foods, and 80% shared that their family engaged in activities at home that they learned through the Laugh and Learn Playdates program.

At the completion of the program, participants shared positive feedback, including increased confidence in parenting skills, stronger bonds with their children, and a greater understanding of how to support school readiness through play. One parent noted, “This program gave me simple, fun ways to help my child learn and grow. We look forward to every session.”
