Garden Start Up Kits

Author: Chuck Flowers

Planning Unit: Carlisle County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Crop and Livestock Production, Gardening and Horticulture, and Local Food Systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

To maintain client engagement during the spring, the Agriculture and Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) agents created and distributed “Garden Start-Up Kits.” These kits were designed to encourage clients to visit the office to receive free seeds and plants. Each kit included the ID-128 publication, which provides comprehensive guidance on gardening techniques, variety selection, disease management, and best practices. Additional materials included Plate It Up recipes, Healthy Choices resources, and healthy eating guides. Clients also received a gardening calendar and in-depth information on growing vegetables such as peppers and green beans. Each kit contained radish and turnip seeds, along with ten additional seed packets. To enhance firsthand gardening experiences, every client was given a Jet Star tomato plant and a bell pepper plant. A total of 100 kits were distributed, and client feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for both the contents and the high quality of the plants.
